Chelsea could sign £36m Leeds United forward after Mendy and Camavinga scouting missions

Long-time Chelsea transfer target Raphinha is still on the Blues’ radar and could sign for the club come the summer. It was previously reported that the Leeds United winger could have left Elland Road in January with Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham United and Bayern Munich strongly linked with a move for the Brazilian.

Raphinha ended up staying put but the rumours surrounding his future have continued to persist and Chelsea remain in the hunt for a player that they have long wanted to bring to Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old’s rise to stardom has been well documented with successful seasons at Sporting Lisbon and Rennes preceding a move to Leeds in the summer of 2020, where he has so far made 25 goal contributions in 51 games for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

It was at Rennes though where Chelsea first noticed him, as club scouts travelled to the French side to watch future Blues’ goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, as well as promising youngster Eduardo Camavinga who has since signed for Real Madrid and is tipped to be a world-class midfielder in the future.

Given how successful Mendy’s transfer has been and with Chelsea’s current crop of forwards struggling for consistency, acquiring Raphinha in the summer could prove to be a very wise move on Marina Granovskai’s part.

It would not prove a cheap deal however, as the Brazilian is valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt, and it can be expected that Leeds will be reluctant to sell their talisman.

But the Yorkshire club are struggling this season, currently 15th in the Premier League and only six points clear of the drop, and if they don’t improve then Raphinha could tire of relegation dog fights and may look to challenge himself at a higher level.

What happens in the summer remains to be seen, but Chelsea are expected to at least explore the possibility of signing a forward, and that well be Raphinha.
