Gianfranco Zola has shared that Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez reminds him of Cesc Fabregas. The Blues coughed up a British-record sum of £106.8million in the January transfer window to sign Fernanez from Benfica. Despite his youth, the 22-year-old midfielder arrived at Stamford Bridge with a big reputation and high expectations.
The Argentina international is a World Cup winner that likes to try to dictate play from the centre of the park when in possession. Also, he’s got the defensive steel and aggression off the ball that make him a great fit for the Premier League. His first two appearances in Chelsea colours have certainly excited the fanbase.
Enzo Fernandez compared to Cesc Fabregas
Blues legend Zola has compared Fernandez with another former Chelsea favourite. He believes there’s similarities in the Argentine’s game to Fabregas, who won several trophies during his time in west London.
“I was so impressed with his qualities. The speed of mind when he’s playing… In a way he reminds me of Cesc Fabregas,” Zola told Football Daily.
Fabregas is one of his generation’s top ball-playing midfielders, so any comparison to him should be gladly received. For Chelsea, they’ve definitely missed a central midfielder with Fabregas’ range of passing ever since he left the club in 2019. It does look like the Blues may now have a natural successor in Fernandez, though.
The No.5’s assist in the weekend draw against West Ham was an example of why he could be such a great signing. His perfectly weighted cross carved open the Hammers defence and was met with a Joao Felix volley.
The plaudits for Fernandez are arriving from all
angles, with Ian Wright recently saying that Chelsea
appear to have made a very exciting addition.
