Antonio Rudiger is very excited after hearing Chelsea will play Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. Rudiger, who played 203 games as a Chelsea player, departed Stamford Bridge last summer as a huge fan favourite.
The 30-year-old defender is now enjoying his debut season as a Real Madrid player. We’re not too surprised to see the German centre-back has grown into a key part of the Madrid starting line-up. Rudiger will now get the chance to reunite with his old club next month in the Champions League.
In a repeat of last season, Chelsea and Madrid will lock horns in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition. The first leg will take place at the Bernabeu before a return match at Stamford Bridge. Rudiger has reacted on social media to the mouth-watering Champions League draw.
“This will be very special – Can’t wait to see so many friends again,” Rudiger wrote on Twitter .
Rudiger is an all-action defender who always plays on the edge with his aggressive style, so it’ll be interesting to see how he controls his emotions against so many of his old teammates. He’s now one of the leading centre-halves in the world in terms of his consistent performances at the top level. Perhaps Kai Havertz has a few tricks up his sleeve to try unsettle his old club teammate, though.
The Athletic claimed last month that Chelsea’s owners can’t believe the club allowed a player of Rudiger’s quality to run his contract down . He ended up leaving as a free agent in the summer, with Madrid the massive winners to get his signature.
It’s certainly going to be great to watch him back at the Bridge, but let’s hope he has an off-day for a change. Keep up to date with all the latest Chelsea news and opinion by following The Chelsea Chronicle’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
