Rafael Leao responds to Chelsea transfer rumours

AC Milan striker Rafael Leao has responded to rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea in the summer transfer window. Leao has been one of AC Milan’s most important players over the past four seasons, registering 36 goals and 31 assists across 147 games for the club.

He played a key role in helping AC Milan win the Italian top- flight title last term and was crowned Serie A Most Valuable Player and Serie A Footballer of the Year. That saw Chelsea attempt to sign the 23-year-old forward last summer and the Blues were once again rumoured to be interested in January.

Leao’s contract is due to expire in 2024 and AC Milan were previously believed to be demanding around £87m for the Portugal international , who also attracted interest from Manchester United among others. Leao has admitted he would one day like to play in the Premier League but has now cast doubt over a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.

‘I don’t like the weather there [in England],’ Leao said in an interview on YouTube. ‘I went shopping the first time I went to London.’

Leao then went on to describe Serie A as ‘very easy’ and spoke about his favourite things to do in Milan in a hint that he may look to extend his stay in Italy. AC Milan sporting director Frederic Massara said earlier this season:

‘We’re confident to reach an agreement with Rafael Leao and extend his contract. ‘We’ll try to find a solution to proceed with Rafa for long time.’

Speaking about Chelsea’s attempt to sign Leao last summer, AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini said:

‘Rafa knows that to become stronger than now the solution is to stay with us. ‘Chelsea’s officially written offer did not arrive but on an informal level it did. Of course, it was rejected.’
